Do Your Homework
You may have already be convinced that the idea of switching supplier is a good idea and you're already looking forward to making savings on your energy bills. However, before we go any further, you might like to test yourself by seeing if you know the answers to the following 10 questions relating to your current tariff and usage...
10 Questions to start helping you take control
- What is the name of your electricity or gas supplier?
- What is the name of the supplier's tariff your currently on?
- How many kWhs of electricity or gas do you use over a 12-month period?
- How much are you currently paying for each kWh of electricity or gas you use?
- Does your contract have a contractual end date?
- What happens to your supply when the contractual end date arrives?
- If you leave your contract early, is there a financial penalty, and how much is it?
- If your contract has an end date, will your supplier remind you to take action, and when?
- Is the rate fixed, capped or variable?
- Are you paying a standing charge?
How did you get on?
Not as well as you would have expected? Well, to be honest we would have been amazed if you instantly knew the answers to any of these questions, other than possibly the name of your energy supplier.
However, the real test is not whether you knew the answers - because almost no-one does off the top of their head - it was whether you were prepared to find out the information because you understood the importance of these questions.
So, if you did have had a look at either your gas or electricity contracts and found the answers you were looking for, that's really cool! It means you've already done your homework and you're prepared to engage with the subject of your energy bills. And that's really the purpose of this section. Well done!
