Stop letter box draughts
Letter boxes are notorious for letting in draughts. One solution is to fit a draught excluder such as brush strip over the letter box. However, the downside is that these devices make it almost impossible to push newspapers and magazines fully through the gap.
This means that you'll probably arrive home from work to find that the newspaper will be rolled up and sticking out of the letterbox, and creating a worse draught than you would have had before the brush strip was fitted.
Even without brush strip, newspapers and post can often be left protruding out of a letter box, contriving to creating a fearsome gale inside the house as cold air rushes in through this very obliging gap.
The real energy saving tip?
Probably that there should be an increased awareness amongst those responsible for posting literature and the like about their responsibilities to ensure they do everything they can to avoid creating this problem in the first place.
Also, it's your call on this one as to whether to fit brush strip or not; or if you think it suitable or practicable, even an external postbox.
