Recycled Packaging

Re-using packaging makes sense both from an environmental and cost-saving perspective. If there is a possible downside to using recycled packaging, it's that many people perceive recycled packaging as unacceptable. In other words, they think that if an item is received in cosmetically imperfect packaging, the contents are also likely to be imperfect.

But we believe you can help them to overcome this way of thinking, and promote the concept of recycling instead. How? By sticking one of our labels on whenever you post anything in re-used packaging.

Scheme Guidelines

To help adoption of this scheme, we have put together some suggested rules based largely on our own experiences. So if you're thinking of using recycled packaging, we suggest:

  1. Packaging must be adequate to ensure the contents are protected and received safely
  2. Make sure that the address is clearly written - this can often be awkard on pre-used packaging
  3. Stick a Recycled Packaging label on your package to demonstrate this is a concious decision
  4. Recover and store any new packaging you receive in the post, ready to be re-used.

And should you have to use new packaging:

  1. Try and use packaging made from recycled materials
  2. Address it and seal the packaging in a way that improves the chances of it being re-used
  3. Put an Energy Saving Label on your new packaging to encourage the recipient to recycle it

Some countries are attempting to put labeling schemes together that advise how you can dispose of your packaging so it can best be recycled and the core materials extracted and used again. But that's not what this scheme is about. We would like to see people immediately re-using packaging rather than it be subjected to further processing that could harm the environment.
