Why we provide normal STD telephone numbers

...or, what are our thoughts on 0500, 0808, 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers?

NGN's or Non-Geographic Numbers

In the telephone industry these numbers are known as NGN or non-geographic numbers. So why do we think these telephone numbers are an issue for so many consumers? Here we think are some of the main reasons...

  • 0844, 0845, 0870, and 0871 numbers are rarely included in inclusive land line calls packages - so you lose money.
  • NGN's cannot be assumed to cost the same as a 'local' phone call and can in some cases cost more.
  • NGN's can often cost more when a call is made from a mobile phone
  • Even 'free' 0800 numbers could cost you dependent on your supplier
  • When you call one of these numbers the company that uses this number may receive a cut of the phone call cost.
  • And if the supplier does get a cut based on call duration, where's the encouragement to answer a call more quickly?
  • They are not location-specific, so when you call an 0845 number you could be diverted anywhere in the world.

Whereas...

  • Geographic numbers such as 01793, 01442, etc give the strong perception of the supplier having a UK presence
  • They are normally included as standard in inclusive land line calls packages - do check with your supplier first
  • STD numbers such should give a degree of certainty as to the likely cost of the call
  • However, even normal STD numbers may be diverted to other locations, both in the UK and abroad

03 Numbers

A solution to help businesses avoid criticism and appear more transparent could be the 03 number. 03 numbers are a recent addition to the range of UK telephone numbers, and are being introduced as an alternative to chargeable 08 numbers such as 0870.

Calls to 03 numbers will cost the same as calls to geographic numbers (starting 01 or 02), and will be included as part of any inclusive call minutes or discount schemes in the same way as geographic calls. Revenue sharing - where the dialled party can receive a share of what the consumer pays to make a call - will not be permitted on calls to 03 numbers.
